To Scale Project

The To Scale Project explores men’s relationships with their/our bodies and in particular with our penis.

Why is it that men’s confidence, sense of place in the world, and relationships—social, sexual, and familial—are so affected by our own perceptions of our genitals, and how we believe we are seen by others?

The To Scale Project is currently a work in progress. I am meeting with volunteers to draw them while discussing their feelings and thoughts on how our perceptions of ourselves affect our lives. We also explore how the influence of social media, and in particular the representation of men in art and pornography, shapes our views of ourselves and others.

Following the in-person drawing and conversation, I create oil portraits of the subject’s erect penis—the form that is of most concern to many, and the dimensions of which are subject to comparison with pornography stars and adult sex toys. Each painting is carefully made to ensure the member is shown exactly life-size, at once showcasing the beautiful variety of the male form and dispelling the myths of what constitutes an "average," "large," or "small" penis.

I am planning an exhibition of the work in Spring 2027.
